The dream of owning a home is still alive and well for many people – and the financial hurdles of realizing that dream don’t have to stop South Dakotans in need from pushing forward on a home purchase.

The Governor’s House program provides safe, affordable, healthy housing for residents who need some assistance.

Here’s a breakdown on what the program has to offer.

What it is

In the last 20 years, the Governor’s House program has been able to serve more than 2,000 South Dakotan families with high-quality, low-cost and energy-efficient homes they can call their own. The focus is, and always has been, on independent living. It’s a state that everyone deserves to be in. To have a home and to feel a part of a community is what makes the Governor’s House program so important.

Who can benefit

While the Governor’s House program was built to assist those in need with purchasing a home in South Dakota, certain qualifications must be met in order to participate. The first of these criteria is that the house must be in South Dakota and owned by those occupying it. Beyond that, the home must be the buyer’s primary residence.

There are also financial restrictions with users of the program in order to ensure that South Dakotans most in need benefit. Households of one or two cannot exceed $44,030 in combined income, while those with three-plus cannot exceed $50,320. There are additional qualifications that must be met depending on age and liquid assets. (Click here to learn more about the income qualifications.)

How to get involved

Keep in mind that there are construction parameters that need to be met in the process, including that the homebuyer foot the bill for the lot where the home will be set up, the building permit for the construction, the foundation for the house to sit upon, setting up any and all utility hookups (and associated fees) and furnishing the floor coverings and appliances for the home.

Getting the ball rolling on a Governor’s House construction project is as simple as putting in a phone call to 800.540.4241 to locate a local rep or by viewing the list yourself.
